RE: Hoses and why we hate them...

I'm not sorry the subject is hoses; who hasn't squished a plant on the
corner of a bed by dragging the hose around?

I noticed my local nursery just installed remote spigots by running either
pipes or sections of high pressure hose underground to various locations. At
each location there were 3 or 4 foot high 4"x4" posts sunk in the ground to
which were attached short sections of metal pipe with spigots on top. I'm
going to ask about them to see what they are and the plans are for draining
them in winter.

I am only too aware of the danger of leaving a closed hose attached in
winter. I did it two winters ago - it was one of those short sections of
hose with a spigot used to avoid reaching behind the bushes to reach the
house spigot. The first time it was used in the Spring, water sprayed all
over the basement by that pipe - it had split with freezing - called the
plumber - he managed with much contortions over and around the heating ducts
to solder a repair. $$$. Needless to say, I am careful to remove and drain
ALL hoses in the fall!
