Shelley,
I went through the Master Gardeners class in Memphis in 1998. It was a
fantastic class and I learned a ton of stuff. In fact I continue to learn!
We are required to give 40 hours of volunteer service per year in different
areas. I do my community service at the greenhouse of the botanical gardens.
The hands on information that I learn there is unbelievable. You work in
all areas. I have learned plant id, bug and disease id germination and
propagation. Not to mention watering and weeding!!! I also go to the MG
meeting held every other month. The people are wonderful, where else can you
go and hang around with garden lovers? As far as career opportunities, I'm
not sure what job opportunities are out there in the horticulture field
except an extension agent position or working in or owning a
nursery/landscape business. If a person was in college, working on a
horticultural degree this would help a lot. If I wanted to I'm sure I could
walk into any nursery and get a job! Hope this info is helpful. Linda zone
