Re : perennials DIGEST V3 #878

Hi, Jill,
This is a problem known as the clematis wilt. It happens very suddenly, the
plant has put many wealthy shoots and buds and suddenly they get blackish
and it can completely die as it happenned to my newly planted 'multi Blue'
last year. It is due to a fungus and it attacks almost the big flowered
hybrids(not the macropetala or montana neither the viticellas). You must cut
back all the black stems even down in the soil if necessary and spray with a
fungicide (in france the organic people use the Bordeaux mixture; I'm sorry
but i don't know the components, for sure it's not a wine despite of the
name) the new shoots that will grow and spray again the next year. I did it
and my Clematis flowered again this year.
