Joanie,
Sorry to say, I think you have diagnosed my problem, too. I have three
ornamental honeysuckles planted on a triangular trellis in full sun:
'Alabama Crimson' (a cv of L. tartarica), L. heckrottii, and L. flava. I
loved them all and they bloomed well til about three years ago when the
tips became infested with black aphids . Soap spray took care of the
aphids, but ever since then, they have had the symptoms you describe. I
thought initially that it was a virus carried by the aphids, but I'm almost
sure now it's fungal.

It hasn't killed them yet (though the L. flava is getting punier by the
moment), and they even bloom a little on a second flush of growth. But I
guess I need to bite the bullet and take them out. Does Clematis get botrytis?

Other possibilities: Trumpet vine (which the hummers love, which is why I
planted the Alabama Crimson in the first place); Ampelopsis (porcelain
vine), Hardy Kiwi (Actaea, I think). Or maybe I'll just give the trellis to
Moonflower or Heavenly Blue morning glory.

Rats.
