RE: baby plants

Dear Barb, The answers are: Yes & Yes :). To explain a little - I think
there is less risk of losing a newly transplanted perennial to the elements
if the roots would at least fill a 2 1/2" pot when set into garden soil.
This is my personal opinion based on my own experience - not university
research. I have been using a product that is advertised in all the growers
magazines at every potting-on occasion, i.e. seedling tray or plugs to pots,
pots to bigger pots or pots to ground. I also use it on my houseplants (1
drop per gallon of fertilizer solution) and soak cuttings in it before
sticking them. I think it must have cod liver oil in it, because that sure
is what it smells like! Quite frankly, I don't know if it really helps or
not because I don't see any dramatic difference between using it and not
using it. Luckily, if you are interested in trying it, it can be purchased
in very small amounts so you don't have to spend a fortune to test your own
results.

Once in a while, however, I have been annoyed to buy a plant that just has
been potted up and has a very small root system. Would the best thing to do
be to leave it in the pot for a few weeks in order for the roots to grow?

Another question - do you expert growers use root stimulator solution (which
smells like the vitamins my mother used to give me) on newly transplanted
perennials?
