Thanks, Claire, for another book I "have" to have!
So -as is not Latin, huh? What a hoot! This argument went on and on for
months on the Mycorrhiza maillist til finally the journal editor stepped in
and made her pronouncement.
As to the other...Most plants are mycorrhizal (in symbiosis with the fungi)
when grown in the wild (as opposed to in pots, with fetilizer added or in
presterilized soil). The plant supplies carbon to the fungus and the fungus
enhances nutrient and water uptake and provides some level of protection
from pathogenic fungi. Mycorrhizae are found naturally in most soils. Some
plants are obligately mycorrhizal, i.e., they will not survive in the wild
unless they are mycorrhizal.
Several companies over the last few years have been offering an inoculant
mix for home and landscaper's use. Whether these inoculants are effective
is the current 'hot topic' in the field. Many researchers feel that these
all-purpose mixes contain mycorrhizal species that are not necessary the
most beneficial for plant growth; on the other hand, most of us agree that
using the stuff will not harm your plants.
I've never bothered inoculating because most soils (unless sterilized by
methyl bromide or some other chemical) have more than enough natural
inoculum for plant growth.
