Just for the record and because you folks were wondering what J&P were
doing with variegated roses - I asked one of my contacts. Here's the
response fyi.
What's the line - "Seek and yee shall find"? ... or something to that
effect. :-)

"Mr. Green,
I received a copy of your e-mail to Bill Ihle. We often see foliage of
seedling roses with variegation. We have selected several of these and
propagated them via cuttings. Some of the plants do seem stable and will
carry the variegation through several generations. However, none were felt
to be of sufficient quality to introduce. What is important to note is
that the variegation does not seem to limit the ability of the rose to grow.
I have seen examples of variegated plants in other breeders nurseries. In
one European pot rose breeder I saw a beautiful pot rose with variegated
leaves. So, it seems that there is a possibility a variegated rose plant
will be commercialized.
J&P does not consider variegation a high priority but more of a novelty.
Certainly variegation has an important role to play in the landscape but so
far we have not experienced a great deal of pressure to develop and
introduce such a rose. So our breeding program does not seek to induce
variegation but rather we simply select and test when we observe it.
I hope I have answered your questions.
