The May issue of Horticulture doesn't address pruning, unfortunately.
I do note that my plants do put out smaller shoots from the crown of
the plant. I have also heard that some plants of tree peony are
grafted upon the rootstock of the non-woody kind, so be aware that
sprouts coming from the base of the plant might be of the herbaceous
type. This should be rather easy to tell from the type of foliage.
