Here in the Cincinnati area (Z6a) perilla grows for me about 12" tall but
I've got it in shade. I never planted it, it simply showed up one year.
Once you have it, it's something like verbena bonariensis--it will seed
around and can be somewhat invasive, although it's not that difficult to
pull. It will also get in your lawn if you care about such things.
I potted up some bulbs two years ago; don't remember what I used for soil,
but suspect it was a mix of mushroom compost, sand, and composted leaves I
had ordered for a bed. I never got around to planting them out last year
after bloom so they came up in the pot again this year. The foliage has died
down, but now perilla is growing in the pot. This pot has never spent time
outdoors near the perilla and the pile I pulled the soil from is about 300
feet away from the nearest perilla.
