Re: Slugs, snails and mildew

Gayle,

There are lots of remedies people use to get rid of slugs, but there is no
silver bullet except persistence: start early, use every means with which
you agree or can abide, and never stop the fight until the winter freeze.

Here are some:

slug baits: very effective, very poisonous to many including humans and pets

Sluggo, Escargo, etc: these are based on common garden nutrients such as
potassium and iron. Slugs die by eating the bait and then not eating. The
pellets last longer after rain than slug baits, but I'm not sure the tiny
baby slugs eat them.

Put out containers of beer, preferably at ground level (special slug jails
are available too). Nasty to clean up....

Take a liter plastic pop container, cut the top 1/3, invert it back into the
bottom 2/3; add beer. Slugs crawl in and don't crawl out. Not as "hands on"
as the container thing if you toss the whole thing.

Go around at night with a shaker of salt. Search the earth, pour salt on
slugs, enjoy the horrid death. (There is something satisfying about it, that
from an otherwise nice person.)

Some people think diatomaceous earth does the job of deterring them (sharp
edges), but others said they've seen TV shows with slugs crawling along a
very sharp knife edge.

It's also said that copper foil around an area deters the slugs. My
ligularia was eaten for a couple years behind a copper shield, and recently
I've heard copper can be poisonous in the garden.

I think that wraps it up. I use a variety of these.

(Someone else will have good things to say about mildew avoidance, I'm
sure.)
