Maybe I can throw in my two cents here on the basis of owning just one plant.
If in colder zones, 4 and lower you will not want to prune any valuable or
beloved plant until you see what you have left in the spring. That means
leaving all of the plant. Those having woody stems especially look OK in
April only to die in May. I prune no roses until there are firm new shoots
(well maybe some of those older huge ones). If you are in a warmer zone and
your experience is different you might proceed as discussed. I would never
prune my tree peiony until the middle of June and then probably not.
Recovery takes longer here.
A question for peony lovers. We have heard discussion of a peony, probably a
tree peony in deep purple/blue tones. I have never seen any peony in this
color range - does anyone else have some knowledge of this plant?
