If a whole area did not return and if you had snow cover as we did in the 
Northeast, you may have lost plants to rodents.  A second idea is that you 
"area" may be poorly drained and that will take out plenty of plants in a 
consisstently cold winter. Look it over carefully and see if there is some 
reason you may have missed.  Gardening is my joy too and one always has one 
more thing to learn.
