Hi Bill,
I'm just getting to my email after a very busy week. Yes the white
Corydalis is ochreleuca and I like it a lot too.
Many areas of the US seem to have trouble growing the C flexuosas -
all the blue ones, including Pere David & Purple Leaf, as well as Blue Panda
and China Blue. In my experience China Blue is the sturdiest of the lot.
The Pacific Northwest may imitate the climate in China where the blues were
found because this does seem to be an area where they are easy to grow.
They are cool weather, spring and fall bloomers and are summer dormant
unless given regular water and cool shade. I can keep mine going through
the summer with reliable fall bloom as long as I remember to water them.
My impression is that folks may think they are dead when they are only
resting in the heat and let them go bone dry for an extended period which
will surely kill them. We do not have the winter cold to contend with, so I
feel pretty sure it is not winter that does them in. I have a lot of shade
in my garden and the blues are wonderful for underplanting other perennials.
I have a new-to-me Corydalis ophiocarpa that has creamy white flowers with a
purple lip and bronzy foliage. It is much more a clumper than a creeper
like the other Corydalis.

I'm not a corydalis expert, but something I saw once, or heard once, leads
me
to believe that what I have growing all over the place here is not C. lutea.
I did buy a pot of C. lutea from a reputable perennial nursery locally a
couple weeks ago and the plant looks very different--somewhat bronzey
foliage
when young. The wild one here is very rangy, foliage flopped all over the
place.
Is the white one you referred to, Marilyn, C. ochreleuca (sp?). A gardening
friend has it all over the place and it IS a beauty. I just got one plant
from her and I don't mind if it spreads at all. Trying C. flexuosa for the
second time. I had two leaves come up the second year the first time I
tried
it, and then nothing this year. Here in Cincinnati, nobody can keep 'China
Blue' or 'Blue Panda'.
