There are two yellow species that seldom rust (hollyhocks) One branches and
is a long lived perennial. These produce flowers over a long period. They
are in most seed catalogs, the branching one becomes very tall. I mix these
in my mind so you will have to check them for yourself, one is ficifolia and
the other rugosa. The leaves are fig leaf shaped. You do not usually see
these plants in nurseries.

Gardens North is also offering a species I am going to try next year, Alcea
pallida. I missed this one this year, the color is lilac.

Malva sylvestris is treated as an annual here and reseeds making it a sort of
perennial companion. This come in various purple shades and is a beautiful
plant that I have never seen rust. Thinking about this one, it has been here
for many years and no, it never rusts.

Whilst these three never rust in my garden, they are covered with Japanese
beetles all summer. JB's arrive in New York on the 4th of July and since
they do not like the west coast you have one small thing to be thankful for.

This is a good question, I too, would like to see more answers.
