Hi Gayle.   The main difficulty with tent caterpillars is that by the time 
you see their huge numbers, they are extremely difficult to kill and 
most of the damage has been done.  

What you are seeing while they are traveling around, like up the walls 
of your home & car, is their migration to seek out new egg-laying 
places.  The time to attack them is when you see the egg masses 
and in the tent.  

Here in NJ we have an extension service fact sheet on them, but I 
thought you might like to read the one from Orono.  :)  It's quite good.

 .... you can always enlist 8 year old boys to squish them for a
