Have you tried Acanthus? The most common species is Acanthus mollis,
Bear's Britches, but I believe this is only hardy to Z 6 or 7. I am
currently growing Acanthus hungaricus (A. balcanicus) along the south
side of my house here in Z 5, and it is perfectly hardy.
