Hi Diann,
Be careful of the roots when you plant your daphnes. They are very
brittle, and if they break, virus can kill the plant. This is one of the
main reasons daphnes are difficult to keep a long time. Sometimes in the
winter, heavy snow breaks a branch and then virus gets in ... They are
worth all the trouble, though, for their beauty and their heavenly scent. I
had some losses this year --a Carol Mackie and a Somerset--because of the
early cold spell with no snow cover in December. Did you get your new ones
locally? They are sooo hard to find at a good price. And it's best to get
small ones because they don't transplant well when they're older ...

So, Doug et al, I just got a couple Daphne xwoodwardii shrubs,
included 2
Carol Mackies. I guess these guys are notoriously hard to grow, and both the
Mackies I got look like they've had a hard year (but have much new growth).
Besides the wilt-pruf spraydown, what else can a person do to give these
shrubs a better chance to thrive? They'll be planted in part-shade.
Thanks much,
Diann
