About this time of year I make the drive to South Bend, IN, from
Indianapolis. I have noticed clumps of a yellow-flowering plant along the
highway, although 10-12" seems a little taller than what I have seen and
identified as birdsfoot trefoil, which at first glance looks like a clump of
yellow-flowered clover.
I thought it was pretty but did some research before trying to get any.
Luckily. Websites about this plant take a variety of approaches--some find it
a therapeutic animal feed, some a beneficial ground cover, some an exotic
wildflower, and others an invasive weed. The past two years I have noticed it
along suburban streets in my neighborhood and it's increasing rapidly.
I don't know if this is the plant you are seeing. I have seen it right where
the grassy median meets the pavement, as well as in the middle of grass. I've
read that it spreads easily from both rhizome and seed. Some websites
indicated it was hard to get started. Go figure.
