There is that dark stem but all else looks like Valerian? Valeriana
officinalis.
If you got it at a donation or contribution sale it is more than likely it is
Valerian. Cheryl is a sharper eye than me but she is correct on the flower
and the scent. I never gave it a thought though we have had it in the garden
for years. You might not agree on the pleasantness of the scent but it is a
scented flower and can grow to six feet or more.

Yes, we have it. Yes, we pull out every seedling, every year. It is a good
tall background plant, varies in height by seedling. It is one of those
plants that a friend or neighbor gives to you. It is usually sold in the
herb section in nurseries.

One plant will grow into a good sized clump and produce several flower
stalks. You can prevent seedlings if you are fast enought with the pruners.

Another great big plant that does the same thing is lovage. That grows about
seven or eight feet tall and the leaves are used in place of celery. I
tastes and smells just like celery, it is in every German garden. Again, you
need to be fast with the pruners. As far as I know, all Angelicas are
biennial. Valerian is a hardy perennial.
