It's not red, but I can say enough about 'May Night' salvia. I even buy it and force it on friends ;-) In my garden it is the first to bloom in April/May and doesn't quit until I cut it back the next Jan or so. It NEVER quits! Gorgeous dark purple flowers, compact habit, no staking required. Bees adore it, though, so don't put it on a well-used path.
