RE: Favorite Salvia?

Debbi,
I have been smitten by Salvias and am currently growing about 30 different
ones that I started from seed. Others I have purchased are hybrids. Here
in my maritime garden I rate the Salvias by length of bloom and hummingbird
attraction. There are 3 especially good reds that the hummers & I love...

S. elegans 'Honeymelon' - a shrub type. Small fire engine red tubular
flowers begin in late summer until hard freeze. Leaves smell like
pineapple. (survived winter). This continued to bloom all winter for me.

S. 'Van Houttii' - large shrub type. Incredible chains of large, dark
crimson flowers in profusion from early summer until hard freeze.
Unfortunately did not survive winter, but my cuttings in the greenhouse did.
This was a traffic stopper out in the hell strip.

S. greggii 'Lipstick' - Small & cute. Blooming now until frost. Great in
containers (as are all the greggii). Bright fuchsia red flowers. It did
survive a very mild winter, but is not reliably hardy here. But maybe for
you?

So many Salvias, so little space!

What is your favorite salvia? I'm looking for a bright red perennial that
will reseed in my northern Calif garden.
