Don't you think someone at Portland Nusery would have easily been able to identify that?
I still have a salvia turkestanica for you too ;-)

Susan,
Could this weed be not Sorrel, but common Dock? Dock leaves and plant form
are a dead ringer for Persicaria 'Firetail' (nee Polygonum). I just dug a
huge one out of my "hell strip" last night.
By the by, all your contributions to the plant community in this strip are
looking great! :)

No, more like a big polygonum leaf, only not pointed on the end. I've never
let them flower so I don't know what they send up.
The white roots are thickish at times and travel feet and feet across (under
ground) and then every once in a while there is a cluster of small roots.
The greenery shoots up everywhere, with rambling or clustered roots. The
roots are 12-16" underground and even cling tenaciously to the cement
foundation of the house (I literally have to scrape them off with the shovel
to dislodge). I have spent HOURS weeding it out, trying to trace and get
every small piece of root, but it keeps coming up. I seemed to have
acquired it around the time I got a load of horse manure-but got it no where
else in the garden but this small bed so that may have been coincidental. I
have tried Round up to no avail.
I will try to find some weed sites; so far no one has been able to identify
it, including my local premiere nursery that have books and books and
excellent staff help.
BIG SIGH!
