It sounds a bit like Persicaria amphibia which I have trouble with and
which is found in Europe and US. It can grow in ponds but is much more
trouble as a weed in ordinary soil. The roots go down and down like the
ones you describe. There are pictures at these sites:

On the other hand, I would say the leaves are fairly pointed. Not
japanese knotweed? I missed the beginning of this thread, so may have
missed a fuller description.
