I have a huge mass of "Bog Sage" and it is a great performer. As long as I
stay steady pulling out the runners it's not a problem.
One of my favorite Salvia's is the Indigo Spires or Salvia guarantica
'Colbalt'....Spires lends itself to purple, 'Colbalt' is self explanitory.
As far a good red Salvia----There is S. confertifoliage but it is huge.
Salvia coccinea is a red, faithful selfsower and when planted in a mass can
be a nice look. My only problem with this one is the spent blooms fall of
the spike but the spike remains on the plant forever without a bloom. For a
shade loving Salvia there is the red vanhootii, another nice red.
Being in California, your climate is much more favorable than mine fror
growing a wide variety of Salvia's---to get "expert" help with options you
might join the Salvia list - it is part of yahoogroups. A superb red for me
is the well known Pineapple Sage, this one is a constant bloomer too.
