My favorite salvia is an annual, S. coccinea, available in red, coral, and 
white.  The cultivar names are 'Lady in Red,' 'Coral Nymph," and 'Snow 
Nymph."  (I think....) I save seed from year to year and am sure it would 
self-sow for you in California.  If you remove the flower spike after 
blooming, it branches very readily and keeps going.
