They all shut down when it gets hot. This is the FIRST year (in
nearly 30) that mine are making a 2nd set of flower buds. I'm amazed.
Went to deadhead them and LO! new buds coming on, just like the
books always said they'd do, but mine have never done. Of course,
this is the first year in my memory that we've actually had spring
last more than a week - it's been so nice and cool and damp instead
of hot and humid and sticky. I and my plants have enjoyed it no end.
I just hope my plants open the buds and flower before the heat sets
in here, which it will do, no doubt.
Not about Dianthus, but apropos cool spring weather - I've had 5
Peonies for nearly 20 years...they always bloom simultaneously and
I'm lucky if the flowers last a week as May is usually hot here.
Well, this year, 4 of them bloomed together and the 5th is just now
opening buds, which, I expect, is what they would always have done
had we had cool spring weather...interesting......
