I planted it last year, fully expecting it to perish in this past winter, but 'lo, the whole patch survived and is blooming profusely this past week. My question, if D. xlatifolius, my references suggest that it could well " bloom itself to death". Is there anything I can do to keep it as presentable as possible for the remainder of the summer.Deadhead, deadhead, deadhead. And if it gets a little *leggy*, sheer it off by half.
I have front borders of this Dianthus in almost every garden since it's the only plant I've found that stays reliably short - and is reliably hardy! If deadheaded well and often, it will probably bloom on and off all summer. The caveat being that the weather is not like last year - too hot and humid and this dianthus shuts down flower production.
It's been a lovely spring for Dianthus!
