What is the likely species of the Dianthus in the photograph at the following link: It would have been commonly available at most garden centers. Is it Dianthus x latifolius?

I planted it last year, fully expecting it to perish in this past winter, but 'lo, the whole patch survived and is blooming profusely this past week.
My question, if D. xlatifolius, my references suggest that it could well " bloom itself to death". Is there anything I can do to keep it as presentable as possible for the remainder of the summer.
Thanks,
Don Martinson
Milwaukee, WI, where we seem stuck in a cool, cloudy, Spring. Temps only starting to get into the low 70's. I have lots of tropical seeds that won't germinate until they feel temps in the 80"s or higher.
