Moving a garden

I know this topic has come up before and I hoped (in vain) I'd never need the information. But it looks as though I may, although I have some time to work on it.

My tentative plan (ha!) is to start digging pieces of perennials, clematis, and some shrubs in January through April or May and putting the house up for sale then. I would store everything in pots and fill the holes with compost or something else so the garden looks smaller but presentable. I don't really want to reseed grass.

I'm looking for any suggestions, tips, or experiences you can share with me. Is it really worth taking all this with you? Moving in itself can be a nightmare, I truly can't fathom moving my house AND my garden. While it seems ridiculous financially to start over, how feasible is it to dig, move and replant a garden?

I'm all ears!
