Chris, your problems with Hakonechloa may be, unfortunately, that it falls
into the category of plants you just can't grow. Despite my very difficult
soil, the strange tale of which I have related here in the past, Hakonechloa
macra Aureoloa does very well for me. Light shade with dappled sun and some
direct, moisture in good years, pretty dry in bad. Of course, I can't grow
any Heuchera, Calycanthus or Weigelia, but that's another story.
