Probably way off base here, but here's my theory on the Hakonechloa.
The root systems are not deep enough in one season for my climate. They
seem to 'slightly' heave during the winter, not enough to kill any other
plant. The spring here is very wet. The new root growth is getting wet
all the time rather than in deep moist soil and add a few late frosts
and they don't survive. The areas I tried are well drained, but when it
rains everyday for a month.....
Curious Merri if yours have extensive deep root systems or not.
