Personally, I found it cathartic to talk about the closing of such a
valuable industry resource. It held particularly true for me since I
designed and managed their Web site for six years.

I think the real problem everyone had was the lack of regard and respect
for Heronswood's employees and reputation. You don't issue a press
release announcing a nursery's closing without notifying the staff first
unless you're trying to pull a fast one.
But I agree, it's all moot now -- we'll wait and see what happens to
the gardens and if Burpee can keep Heronswood's innovative spirit alive.
Plants here are growing nicely; the cool spring rains and temperatures
really made things lush. Mango Meadowbrite [TM] coneflowers were the
first to open, and Echinacea pallida is next in the long procession of
summer-blooming flowers.
