I wonder how in the devil voles could get through hardware cloth? Or could there be some other kind of pest that likes to dine on lily bulbs? Like grubs?

I do not know why you are not keeping lilies longer... the ones I mentioned have been in my garden for some years now.. more than 5 on majority. L.speciosum is newest to my gardens right now. I do amend the soil heavily. See that they are well drained in winter.. but that does not .. is not... a necessity with some species that like moisture. My pH is neutral to slightly acidic for the most part. Almost a 7 in some places.

            When I transplanted lots of Asian lilies and tulips to one side of my garden they were wiped out by voles in short order...even with hardware cloth cages. Cats are helping with that one.

L canadense never did too well for me; wimpy, perhaps too much competition.  L henryi did better when it got more sun than it has now; going to have to move him this fall.  Had speciosum probably 20 yrs ago.  Don't know what happened to to it.  Keep meaning to get it again.  Perhaps this fall. I 've had the species martagon a couple of times; doesn't seem to stick around longer than 3 or 4 years?  Rodents?
