I agree; this is a wonderful thread. While there are always the "tried
and true" plant combinations, it's the serendipitous ones that sometimes
make gardening so rewarding.
I once underplanted a mature Miscanthus sinensis (Ribbon Grass) with
Lamium, and put a bunch of Echinacea "White Swan" in close enough so
that the flowers emerged through the foliage of the Miscanthus. It was
simply stunning.....the simple greens and whites, with the subtle accent
of the "cones." This whole arrangement was a transition point along a
fence, between a border done entirely of hot yellows and reds and
another that merged into the blues and mauves. It worked perfectly to
keep them separated visually, partly because of the mass of the grass,
and partly because of the neutrality of the color.
I wonder what we all would do without ornamental grasses? They give so
much and demand so little!
