Eccromacarpus (Bignoniaceae)


Hardy/half hardy perennial climbers
Germination Temperature: 55-60 F (13-15 C)
Germination Time: 30-60 days

Sow in early spring in John Innes Seed Compost just covering ther seed
with compost.  Transplant the seedlings when large enough to handle into
3 in(7.5 cm) pots and grow on at 60 F (15 C) in good light. 
Harden off and plant out when all risk of frost has gone 3 ft (1m) apart
in a sunny spot in loamy, well drained soil and provide support for the
rapidly growing shoots. E. scaber is hardy in sheltered situations in
areas which dont't have extremely cold winters.  It is fast growing,
free flowering and has varities with golden yellow (E.S. aureus),
carmine red E.S. carmineus) and scarlet (E>S> coccineus) blooms. It is
also valuable as a quick growing flowering pot plant.

                                                    Seed compost: 

                                                                 2 parts
sterilised loam 
                                                                 1 part
moss peat 
                                                                 1 part
sharp sand

                                                    The loam and peat is
put through in 3/8 in (9mm) sieve.


                                                    To each bushel
(8gal/36l) is added: 

                                                                 1.5 oz
(42gm) superphosphate 
                                                                 3/5 oz
(21gm) ground limestone

                                                    Potting Compost: 

                                                                 7 parts
sterilised loam 
                                                                 3 parts
moss peat 
                                                                 2 parts
sharp sand

                                                    The loam and peat is
put through a 3/8 in (9mm) sieve.
                                                    To each bushel
(8gal/36l) is added

                                                                 3/4oz
(21gm) ground limestone 
                                                                 4oz
(110gm) 14-14-14 Osmocote

                                                    This makes John
Innes Potting Compost No. 1.
                                                    For a richer mix
simply double the quantity of
                                                    John Innes Base to
make No. 2 or treble it to 
                                                    make No.3
