Thanks for the reply, Donna.
I'm about to prove I am not the best listener...:) I believe the reason was
because cedar mulch is very acidic and clematis like a lime soil. Does that
make sense?

I have heard that clematis can be tough to grow, however, after seeing one
"come back from the dead" this year I wonder how true that can be. I have
three clematis, and all are growing quite well, though none are blooming.
Maybe I'm not feeding them enough?

I was having a discussion with a friend about what exactly "cut back hard"
means just the other day. Should I have cut back my clematis this year?
