I've never heard of mulch being a problem with clematis. I thought that the
mulch would be good to keep the roots cool, as recommended. I have 2
clematis that I planted last year, one is starting to bloom quite lovely (for the
2nd year) and the second one is playing catch up since it was a much
smaller plant.
In the past I've cut back all but about a few inches in the early spring
(when I'm doing yard clean), and they start to fill in as soon as it warms.
I'm also zone 5.
