clematis and mulching

The reason that organic mulches are not recommended for clematis, is
that they are subject to a condition known as clematis wilt. The
foliage will suddenly turn brown (wilt) and the above ground growth may
be completely killed. Often, the plant will resprout from the ground
(usually next season) and grow just fine. This condition is aggravated
by organic mulches. A better choice for mulching (they do like cool
roots) is to use stones to shade the ground around the roots.
