worms

Thanks everyone for the informative thread about clematis.
I just came in from weeding, and was horrified to see a large area of my
lawn infested with worms (caterpillars?)! They are about 1-inch long,
white, almost transparent, and they are EVERYWHERE. My husband compared them
to ashes from fireworks. The area they are in was covered in clover, and it
is definitely dead. Also, there is a pear tree close to the area they are
living in. My flower beds are about 2-feet from the patch -- I saw a couple
in the beds -- and I am very worried about what they could do.
Does anyone know what these are, and if I should worry about them? I'd
appreciate any help at all.
