I've grown Alcea nigra (the "black" hollyhock) and a variety of deep
maroon tulips, that are usually termed "black." Also I love Cotinus
coggygria ( the smokebush), for its wonderful maroon foliage and modest
size. It makes a nice anchor in a perennial border - particularly one
located in a corner.
