Dead head what?
I have become lazy and if the plant is huge, I have just used a
electrical brush trimmer.
Quick, and fast. This is a great tool for fall clean up.
If it is small, I tell my three year old daughter to pull the flower
head.
Hey, it works for me....

Hell, I have never used a journal, you just plant and see what happens.
If you are creating a perennial border, it is wise to read a few books
and understand your bloom times and heights of your plants. Remember,
small upfront and large in the background. Each year you will learn
what is misplaced due to height or color. From your yearly experence,
you natural see what is misplaced.
Go and visits some gardens, check out some perennial design books from
the library. Look for the books with the schmatics on planting. Follow
a plan you will see in time how to improve things.
Pretty soon, you will see that you don't have room to plant anything
else like me.
