Depends on the plant. Irises and daylilies get their dead blooms
pinched until all blooms are done (if you have time), then the whole
stalk gets cut, other things are ignored until you can't stand it and
shear the whole thing back (like nepetas and hardy geraniums and lady's
mantle), coneflowers (echinacea & rudbeckia) are pinched when there are
more shrivelled blooms than fresh ones in a clump (if you have time, and
if you don't want to leave the cones standing for winter interest).
Astilbes won't rebloom, pinched or not, so I cut the stalks, though
others leave them on for the season, brown & shrivelled as they are. The
flower stalk is a key here -- if long & relatively solid with flowers at
the top, cut the whole stalk. If leafy & more tender, snip just the
dead blooms. You'll soon have your own methods.

My journal is almost 10 years old and I write in it maybe 3-4 times a
year. Write what you feel, when you feel it, and tuck your garden
photos in the back of it. Keep addresses for good nurseries in it. Make
lists of plants you'd like to try, make notes of successes, failures,
insects, birds, and the weather. Mention that your Aunt Sue or Uncle
Frank paid a visit, jot down that the car died & you got a new one or
that Junior made the wrestling team, or that the baby's molars finally
came in, or the dog needed stitches. In years to come, the notes of
your garden and your life will weave a single web that will bring back
memories and smiles.

Or you could print out all these e-mails and paste them in...:-)
