Jeanne,
1. The best resource I've seen on how to deadhead is the book "The
Well-Tended Perennial Garden." I purchased the book earlier in May and I
cannot put it down. Not only does it go into great detail on how to care
for your perennials, but it shows you pictures and has detailed line
drawings of exactly where to deadhead and how to do it. Furthermore, it
lists perennials individually, giving you cultural information and how well
the plants respond to which pruning/deadheading technique.
2. Your garden journal should have what is important to you. Things I
list in mine: weather, what's blooming, plant combinations I'd like to
try, notes to myself about plants I'd like to move around, comments about
what worked and what didn't, seed packets of things I've started, clippings
of articles from different magazines about the plants in my garden or ones
I'd like to try, pressed flowers, poems I've found about gardening/nature,
pictures I've taken of my garden in various stages of growth, pictures from
magazines of other people's gardens for inspiration, etc etc. It is a
highly personal thing to me. I wouldn't take it out to show it to someone,
yet I frequently refer to it when asked a question.
Your questions are good ones; don't berate yourself.
