I was really excited a few days ago. Last fall I did dig up my dahlia tubers
and then thought of something a lady at the nursery had told me. I live in
zone 5, close to zone 6 and have a microclimate close to zone 7, I think.
After I dug them up, I just dug a deeper hole (about 10 inches or so) and then
stuck the tuber back in. I did this on three of them, but a couple of the
holes were not quite that deep. I didn't think any of them would really come
back, but to my amazement one did. Almost pulled it thinking it was a weed.
We did have a very mild winter, but we also had a hard freeze about the first
week or so of March. (I am talking way below zero).
Sure got my roses. Next year, I am just going to plant some of the dahlias a
little bit deeper and see what happens. Knowing me, if I try to save them,
I'll kill them any how.
