I live in Zone 6a approaching 5 in the Cincinnati area. I had half a dozen of
the dwarf dahlias last year and two of them came back this year and are about
to bloom, but we all know it was a strange year for many plants in many areas.
This has never happened before, but I am positive it's due to the mild winter.
So I wouldn't use the fact that your dahlias made it this year as proof that
the deeper burying saves them. Of course, if the alternative is to leave them
there and be sure they freeze and die, then I guess it's worth the experiment
anyway. Let us all know what happens.
