RE: Virus - no joke

Jaime (and everyone else),

Shows how much the bums at M$ know! :-)

You can NOT get a virus by simply opening an e-mail message. You
'catch' a virus by running an infected application or macro ( like the
macros in Word or Excel). Since an e-mail is not an application, but a
simple text file (no matter how much formatting is in it), you are not
running anything and therefore cannot get infected.

Now if the e-mail has an application attached to it, and you run the
application, now you can get infected.

This panic goes around the net every couple of months. And has done it
for at least the last decade. The original hoax was called 'Good
Times'. And I even still see that one. It is always a 'new' virus,
which is odd since you always get it by opening an e-mail and it always
erases your hard drive (sounds like an old one to me). Naturally, not
many people know about it, especially since it doesn't exist. And it
has always been verified by some credible sounding source. For
instance, about 3 months ago, the word was that IBM had announced the
presence of this 'new' virus on the 11 o'clock news.

In short, it is a joke being played by some immature twerp taking
advantage of the fact that an extremely large percentage of PC users
don't really know how computers work. Nothing against the computer
users of course. How many people really know how a car works, or a
microwave, etc., etc.

Just delete it.

Greg.

I've checked this out to the best of my ability and it
appears
to be no joke. I had one friend at Microsoft confirm
and he
		wasn't laughing.
		FWIW,
