For a beginning gardener, there's another benefit to this approach. No
matter how hard I try, I have a tendency to plant things too close
together. This year I'm interplanting with annuals in the hope that
it will solve my problem, but using gallon-sized plants also helps me
get a better sense of space. Even though they always said that extra
white space was good in my design classes, I just can't stand having
that much open area between my 2" pots. I'm getting better now, but
when I started -- Oh boy!
