Janis and others,

Not all herbs are perennial in nature. Some are annuals and others
biennial. I think it may also depend on your zone. What may be an annual
in zone 6a may be perennial in a warmer zone 8 or 9.

To add to the confusion, some herbs can be successfully overwintered
indoors as houseplants in the colder zones, and yet others can reseed to
make themselves appear to be perennial.

I could be wrong, but this is how it appears to be in my zone 6a garden.

Val in KY
zone 6a
