I am just beginning to understand the concern
about attachments. In fact, It is only recently
that I learned how to send an attachment using Eudora,
and with each new skill comes a caution.
Attachments aren't inherently bad, but perhaps
we could try a bit of courtesy on the list for those wanting
to share seed, plants, etc. How about
the sender 'offering' to send the person who
is interested, an attachment and then
writes them privately, rather than the
whole list? Some lists (I'm also learning
'list etiquette') do not appreciate that members
send unrequested attachments.
Attachments to be careful of are
.doc
.exe
files. These should be opened only after checking
with a virus check program. These types of
files should be checked routinely.
The smallest, quick-to-download files
for text are
.txt files.
.txt files can easily be
created in windows95 by using the Notepad function.
Computer viruses attack indiscriminately,
just like 'human' viruses. You can
get a computer virus from someone you know, just as you can
get a flu from a friend - a long-time friend,
or a new, a well-meaning friend.
Hope this helps.
