I've cut mine back at the stalk and even with
new growth and a fairly long growing season, I
didn't get rebloom. So basically, leave them
alone and they'll continue to flower, it sounds
like.

I went out to look at where I would cut them
back if I were
to try doing it the other way. I'm not sure I'd
do that, as
I think you'd end up with a lot of ugly stalks in
the
garden, at least until they started growing new
shoots.
